Souper Bowl of Caring Celebrates 25 Years of Giving and Serving

It is projected that over 150 million people will be tuning in to watch the New England Patriots take on the Seattle Seahawks in the 49th Super Bowl game on Sun., Feb. 1, while 50 million Americans will be struggling with hunger. Souper Bowl of Caring gives people the chance to help those who are in need and to think of those who do not even have a bowl of soup to eat.

Three of the members on the MYC are also on the Souper Bowl of Caring National Youth Advisory Board (NYAB) this year. Only 14 HS students are selected from across the nation, so it is a great honor to serve on it. Houston is well represented! The NYAB board members raise awareness about hunger in their communities, and are the collective face and voice for Souper Bowl of Caring.

Meeting new faces, discovering your hidden skill sets, enhancing your resume and building your self-esteem are just a few benefits of volunteering, says Katy Price. Price is the Chief Service Officer for the City of Houston’s Volunteer Initiatives Program, or VIP for short. “Volunteering is important because it has an enormous impact in the community,” she explains. “Volunteers deliver critical services whether it be delivering meals to homebound seniors, mentoring kids after school, walking dogs at the local animal shelter or helping out at the food bank.” The city’s initiative program encourages individuals to explore a variety of programs that allow them to experience the many facets of civic engagement, Price says.

Houston Texans President Jamey Rootes, Pro Bowler Duane Brown and the Houston Texans Cheerleaders took part in a volunteer blitz at the Houston Food Bank to kick off the 2014 Souper Bowl of Caring on Wednesday morning.

Mayor's 3rd Annual Back 2 School Fest
Mayor Annise Parker welcomed thousands of pre-registered students and their families to the Third Annual Mayor's Back 2 School Fest on Saturday, August 10, 2013. Participation in the fest was by advance registration only, so families who were not able to pre-register to participate in the event are encouraged to call the 2-1-1 United Way Helpline for referrals to community agencies offering back-to-school supplies and resources.
