Program Description: Please join the Mayor’s Office of Education Initiatives and the Houston Public Library’s joint mentor program with the After School Zones. After School Zones provide positive out-of-school time for students in an academically rich environment. To facilitate the success of Houston students, the program needs mentors (18+) that are willing to help a small group of students prepare a college and career plan. The mentoring program is only a commitment of an hour and thirty minutes a week for four consecutive weeks and focuses on the students’ goals, abilities, and the endless possibilities of a strong education.
Description of Duties/Essential Functions:
· Provide mentoring to a group of 3 – 5 students
· Mentors will share with students from their experience, and use their achievement of personal, academic and career exploration to help guide students throughout the program
· Mentors will collaborate with library staff to connect students to useful library resources, such as free on-line tutoring
· Support, listen, motivate, answer questions, helps students find answers
· Strive for mutual respect, build self-esteem
· Help students create a network of positive role models in their life
· Be dependable and consistent in meeting time requirements
· All mentors are required to have a background check administered by the City of Houston

How to Sign-Up to be a Mentor:
- Pick a library location. It may be more convenient for you to pick the library that is closest to your home or job.
- Click here (the Houston Public Library website where you can sign-up to be a volunteer).
- On the top right hand corner click on the black “Sign Up!” button.
- Input your contact and other basic information.
- Once you have completed a volunteer profile, please click on the “go to the sign-up page” link (DO NOT LOG OUT).
- Scroll down to the library location of your choice.
- Click on the “After School Mentor” link and then click the black “Sign Up” button.
- Once you have been approved, a representative from the Houston Public Library and the Mayor’s Office will notify you.
