Houston is a member of Cities of Service, a bipartisan coalition of mayors who have committed to work together to lead a multi-year effort to expand impact volunteerism. In June 2010, Houston was awarded a Cities of Service Leadership Grant, a $200,000 two-year grant to hire a Chief Service Officer and develop and launch a high-impact service plan. In March of this year, the city will launch a high-impact service plan and a new website that connect volunteers with organizations working in the areas of greatest need in Houston.

Founded in New York City on September 10, 2009 by 17 mayors from cities around the nation, Cities of Service is a bipartisan coalition of mayors who have committed to work together to lead a multi-year effort to expand impact volunteerism. The coalition has rapidly grown since its inception and now includes more than 100 mayors, representing more than 49 million Americans across the nation.
